YouTube is one of the biggest platform for sharing video contents. Alexa ranks YouTube as the second most popular website on the internet. The first place is reserved by its very own parent organization Google. However, as a user on Reddit has found out a way to hide bypass YouTube ads. This is really a great blow on the YouTube’s face. It is because it’s business model is serving ads.
Creators create video content on YouTube. And monetize their content by allowing ads to show up on their creation. It’s really the only way for YT to generate revenue.
How do I bypass YouTube ads ?
Normally, we have a URL which looks like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjW-isgOijs
. Now this is a regular URL which is pretty much well normal. All you have to do to bypass ads from showing on youtube is just this. Take the URL and add .
right after the end of .com
.
The ad-free version of the URL above will be this : https://www.youtube.com./watch?v=xjW-isgOijs
. Do you happen to notice the change? I hope you do because it just works.
Obvious Fact: You don’t have to do this constantly. Only once per session. All the URL in current page will respect what you did.

Why does this work ?
Glad you asked! Well here is an explanation on why it works. It works because this is just an edge case. The website’s URL is not normalized. URL normalization is nothing but making sure the URL follows the defined standard in the RFC‘s standards on how a URL should look like.
So, apparently YouTube did not make sure about this for some unknown reasons. Maybe we will find the explanation sometime in the near future. I’ll make sure to post any follow ups regarding the matter.
Not only YouTube but some other news site are also affected by this issue. The website provided in the original reddit post is NYTimes you can check it out if you like.
